Stem Cell and Platelet Procedures for Knee Injuries & Osteoarthritis
Regenexx® Stem Cell Procedures are breakthrough, non-surgical stem-cell treatments for people suffering from knee pain due to common injuries to the knee meniscus, ACL or MCL, cartilage, or who are experiencing degenerative conditions, such as osteoarthritis. Traditional options for patients suffering from these conditions include arthroscopic knee surgery to repair ligament tears, or total knee joint replacement. With both surgeries, months of rehab are required, and the patient must be aware of and prepared to take on the risks. As an alternative, the Regenexx-SD™ (same-day) procedure may help alleviate knee pain and the conditions that cause it with a simple office injection procedure.

2014 Regenexx Knee Patient Outcome Data
As the nation’s leader of orthopedic stem cell procedures, only Regenexx publishes this type of analysis of patient outcome data. The data is made possible thanks to the massive numbers that have been accumulating for years in the Regenexx patient registry.
This patient outcome data is not part of a controlled trial. Every Regenexx Procedure patient becomes part of a registry to track outcomes and any complications. This data is a compilation of patient input to the Regenexx Patient Registry at regular intervals following their Regenexx Procedure.
This data utilizes LEFS (Lower Extremity Functional Scale) data from our knee arthritis patients treated with stem cell injections. Functional questionnaires ask the patients questions such as how well they can walk, run, climb stairs, etc. The improvements following the Regenexx-SD procedure are highly statistically significant. Jerome Williams earned the nickname “Junkyard Dog” early into his 9 year NBA career for his hard work and tenacious defense. His body also suffered a lot of wear and tear during that time which brought him to Health Link Medical Center’s Dr. Vishal Thakral for a Regenexx Knee Procedure. Please watch the video above as Jerome describes his procedure as well as his successful recovery.
Dr. T was great. He came in and explained my injury from start to finish…I think this is just the start of something big
Jerome was so satisfied with his treatment that he has had additional procedures performed on his other knee and shoulder. He’s finally sleeping well without the pain, is able to work out on the court and is even dunking the basketball again! He already has plans to have additional Regenexx procedures to help alleviate the other problems associated with his professional athletic career.
Less than a year after successful Stem Cell treatment on both knees, Tony Mainz is top ranked nationally in the USASA Men’s Kahuna Division. That seemed highly unlikely at the end of last season after surgeons told him he was done snowboarding. With holes in the medial meniscus of each knee, surgeons told Tony that even following surgery, he should expect to be in a lot of pain.
Tony had heard about stem cell procedures. His research brought him to Health Link Medical Center and Dr. Paul Handleman who expressed confidence that the Regenexx Procedure could help Tony return to snowboarding. Though it seemed too good to be true, he decided he had nothing to lose and had the treatment performed on both knees.
“I was very pleased to find out that you had opened a clinic in Mill Valley, CA, under the direction of Dr. Handleman. I made an appointment and was willing to give your procedure a try, as I was not ready to have a knee replacement. For your information, I am an active 71 year old male, who has played soccer for over 60 years and I was determined to continue playing. I had the procedure in July of last year and even Dr. Handleman was very honest with me that he could not guarantee any major improvement in my knee. I am now pleased to report that I am back to playing soccer without major discomfort and absolutely loving the fact that at my age, I am able to participate in the sport I love.” KB – Sonoma, CA
Knee Damage and the Regenexx-SD (Same-Day) Procedure
Stem Cells are in all of us and they are responsible for healing injured bone, ligaments, tendons and tissues. They are the key component behind the Regenexx Procedures. As we get older or injured, we sometimes cannot get enough of these cells into the area in need. The Regenexx Procedures help solve that problem by precisely delivering a high concentration of stem cells and growth factors into the injured area, aiding your body’s ability to heal naturally. Patients typically avoid the long, painful rehabilitation periods to restore joint strength and mobility following surgery. Regenexx patients are usually encouraged to walk the same day, and most experience little or no down-time from the procedure.
Regenexx Procedures were recently featured on “The Doctors” TV show. The episode featured Dr. Christopher J. Centeno and Dr. Ron Hanson from the Centeno-Schultz Clinic in Colorado, along with patient Barbee James, who sought stem cell treatment following traditional knee surgery. The 6 minute video provides a nice overview of the Regenexx-SD (Same Day) Stem Cell procedure, which is offered at both of our Health Link Medical Center offices in Oceanside and Mill Valley, California.
Seattle King TV recently featured Regenexx patient Paul Lyon in this news segment. Lyon chose to undergo a Regenexx-SD knee procedure, rather than an invasive and traumatic knee joint replacement surgery. The story looks at his results and includes an interview with Dr. Christopher Centeno, founder of the Regenexx Procedures.
PRICING AND INSURANCE COVERAGE
We understand that as a cash procedure, patients need to have a good understanding of what the typical costs are for each type of treatment. Health Link Medical Center also offers easy payment plans starting at $140 per month for those who qualify.
*The Entire Regenexx-SD Stem Cell Treatment Protocol is included in the pricing above. Details follow:
The Regenexx SD Protocol – More Than a Same-Day Stem Cell Procedure
The SD (same day stem cell) procedure is designed to achieve the best possible result. Through several years of testing on thousands of patients, Regenexx has developed a protocol that has demonstrated the best possible patient outcomes. This entire protocol is typically part of a Regenexx-SD procedure and is included in the pricing range shown above.
Prolotherapy Pre-Injection: This injection is designed to prepare the joint/tissue for the stem cell transplant. The purpose is to help stabilize the affected joint by tightening supporting ligaments. The injection uses a dextrose concentration or platelet concentration that causes mild inflammation that stimulates increased blood flow and your own resident stem cells to begin to differentiate and proliferate. This visit usually takes less than one hour.
Stem Cell Transplant: You will be scheduled to start your stem cell day with a morning appointment where your specialist will aspirate bone marrow from your hip and blood drawn from your arm, in a comfortable procedure that takes from 30 to 45 minutes. This procedure should not be confused with a bone marrow biopsy which usually is very painful. The aspiration is done with local anesthesia and is very well tolerated with a minimum of pain and discomfort. Your marrow and blood is then processed in our on –site laboratory and is ready in about 90 minutes. Then your transplant procedure is performed and takes from 45 to 90 minutes.
Platelet Procedure Post-Injection: We call this Regenexx SCP/PL as it contains concentrated platelets and platelet lysate (pure growth factors) derived from your blood. You will have your blood draw, processed in the lab and then injected in your tissue. The entire visit takes about 2 hours.
Today’s newest regenerative injection procedures, such as Platelet Rich Plasma and Stem Cell Procedures are not covered by insurance. However, some portions of the entire process are covered as shown below.
Regenexx-SD Procedure Overview
The Regenexx-SD procedure begins when the doctor thoroughly numbs the back of the hip (PSIS) and takes a small bone marrow sample through a needle, as well as a blood draw from a vein in the arm. The marrow is rich in Mesenchymal Stem Cells, which are responsible for healing damaged tissues. The stems cells are isolated from the marrow sample and platelets are isolated from the blood sample. After preparation, these two components will be reinjected directly into the damaged area of the joint using advanced imaging guidance. This ensures the cells are delivered to the exact location of need.
Some patients are apprehensive about the bone marrow aspirate portion of the procedure, but most are surprised to find that they experienced very little pain or discomfort:
“I had some concern about the pain involved in extracting the bone marrow. All of my fears were groundless. All of the procedures were painless. The doctor explained everything he did and I was awake and involved the whole time. The experience was better than expected.” Betty M.
